'Very important': Alexis Mac Allister says Liverpool have three 'amazing' players who Arne Slot barely picks

Liverpool are likely to go strong again on Wednesday night as they face Bologna in the Champions League.

The Reds may need a little tinkering with the team as the game is sandwiched between two away fixtures in the Premier League.

But any changes are unlikely to be wholesale from Arne Slot, as he relies heavily on the same players who have brought Liverpool a good start to the campaign.

One player who has been predictably important for Slot so far has been Alexis Mac Allister.

Ryan Gravenberch may have taken the headlines in the Liverpool midfield, but Mac Allister has been equally impressive.

But as the Slot prepares to shuffle his pack a little against Bologna, the Argentine has heaped praise on three members of the Liverpool squad who have been lesser-seen this season.

Alexis Mac Allister praises Liverpool trio

Liverpool’s midfield has earned so much praise throughout the season so far.

The trio of Mac Allister, Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai has been key to sending the Reds to the top of the Premier League table.

However, after an ineffectual display at Wolves on Saturday, we think Slot will drop Szoboszlai – or at least rest him – for Wednesday’s Champions League game.

That would likely lead to an opportunity for Curtis Jones to start just his second game of the season.

And speaking in the pre-Bologna press conference on Tuesday, Mac Allister claimed that Jones and fellow back-ups Wataru Endo and Harvey Elliott are just as important as the regular midfield starters.

“You talk about me, Ryan and Dom but we have amazing players like Curtis, Endo and Harvey,” the 25-year-old insisted.

“All of them are very important and that’s what we want, to compete between us and get better.”

Who else will start in midfield against Bologna?

It may be that Slot does decide to go with his regular midfield three against Bologna at Anfield.

However, with Szoboszlai looking in need of a slight rest, it would make a lot of sense to bring Jones in.

Jones was very good against West Ham on his only previous start of the season. He could thrive in a more advanced role against the Italians.

For Endo, though, it is likely to be a different story. We can’t see Slot making two changes in midfield and bringing the Japanese in.

With Elliott still injured, we think it’s set to be a midfield of Mac Allister, Gravenberch and Jones who try and continue Liverpool’s perfect start to the Champions League campaign.
