It's no secret the future of Sam Lammers appears to lie well away from Rangers.

The Dutch forward had a deeply troubled six months at the club after a stuttering stint in Italy with Atalanta came to an end.

Rangers reportedly paid the Italian side £3.5m to sign Sam Lammers and the fee hung over the nervous Dutchman as he toiled in Glasgow.

Afforded plenty of opportunities, despite his clear technical talents Lammers struggled to impress Rangers fans by doing what he was brought to the club for; to score and create goals.

A resurgent six months on loan at FC Utrecht in the Netherlands have raised hopes that the once top Dutch talent can resurrect his career at the age of 27.

But a transfer return to the Eredivisie side appears increasingly unlikely as the Domstedelingen turn their attentions elsewhere.

Utrecht launch striker bid

Utrecht have already been busy bolstering their frontline this summer.

Having already snapped up David Min from RKC Waalwijk the club were clear that they'd like Sam Lammers to return from Rangers on a more permanent basis.

The sticking point – as ever – was finances.

Lammers would have to take a pay cut to join the club whilst the expected outlay of somewhere in the region of £3m is rich price for a club like Utrecht to pay.

Now, the Dutch club's patience appears to have run out with Utrecht turning their transfer attentions elsewhere.

As reported by Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, the Eredivisie side have struck a deal with Standard Liege over Dutch U21 striker Noah Ohio.

The deal all but signals the club's intentions to move on from Rangers striker Sam Lammers, who has been clear that he wants to leave Ibrox this summer.

What next for Sam Lammers at Rangers?

Sam Lammers's future is now up in the air at Rangers with a sale expected in the weeks ahead.

Who might purchase the striker is the subject of continued speculation.

The latest Dutch side to be linked are AZ Alkmaar, with the Eredivisie side banking a small fortune from the sale of Vangelis Pavlidis to Portuguese giants Benfica.

They've got the money and need a striker with Sam Lammers very much proven at Eredivisie level, banging in 11 goals for Utrecht since January.

It appears to be a good match and as one door closes another opens for the maligned Rangers striker.

Let's just hope any fee recouped is more sensibly spent on the Rangers squad.
