Revelation made over Stoke City striker's loan deal amid continued injury problems

Stoke City have no option to recall Ryan Mmaee from Rapid Vienna amid his wait for a debut at his loan club, reporter Fraser Gillan has said.
Stoke City saw changes made to the playing squad in the summer transfer window, making the early decision to move on Steven Schumacher and replace him with Narcis Pelach a surprise one.
However, the Spaniard has started promisingly in Staffordshire and there’s hope the Potters can finally start to look up after a stay in the Championship to forget ever since dropping out of the Premier League.
Among the players signed in the summer of 2023 when Alex Neil was in charge was Ryan Mmaee. He moved to the Potters after a strong stay in Hungary with Ferencvaros but injury issues and off-pitch problems left him out of favour come the summer transfer window.
As such, he was allowed to leave Schumacher’s Stoke City squad.
Mmaee is yet to play for loan club Rapid Vienna with a hamstring injury keeping him out and his persisting absence has raised questions of a winter recall. However, writing on X, reporter Fraser Gillan states that there is no such option for the Potters.
It was reported at the time that Mmaee’s loan included an option to buy, so with no recall option in place, he will stay in the Austrian capital for at least the rest of this season.
The focus for Mmaee
It’s certainly not been the easiest start to life for Mmaee at Rapid Vienna. He would have hoped to show what he could do again while away from Stoke City, but his extended wait for a debut amid his hamstring injury will have frustrated him.
Nevertheless, Gillan’s update suggests he shouldn’t be far away from a return to action, so he’ll be focusing on the final stages of his recovery as he builds towards a comeback.
Mmaee has found success on the continent before in Cyprus and Hungary and perhaps his stay in Austria could yet see him return to the dangerous best he displayed before arriving in the Championship.
A way back at Stoke City?
The rumoured buy option means Stoke City may well have already seen Mmaee don their colours for the last time. The lack of a January recall suggests those in power at the time of the deal felt there was little chance of him having an impact this season too.
However, the change in management could offer a slight hope for Mmaee if he wants to come back and make a fist of things in red and white.
That would require the buy option not being triggered by Rapid Vienna, though there could be a chance of that if he isn’t able to make an impact.
Then, perhaps the door could open for Mmaee to make an impact on Pelach, but there’s a lot of ifs when it comes to deciphering what the future could hold for the Stoke City loanee.
