Stoke City land big Premier League loan star boost amid recall fears
Yesterday at 04:44 AM
Stoke City loan star Tom Cannon is likely to see out the season with the Potters despite Leicester City’s need for a striker, as per TEAMtalk.
Stoke City made good use of the loan market in the summer transfer window, bringing a number of players in on temporary deals from Premier League clubs.
Ashley Phillips has made a great impression at the heart of defence while Andy Moran and Lewis Koumas have also come up with helpful contributions in their spells away from Brighton and Liverpool respectively.
However, none have starred quite like striker Tom Cannon. The 21-year-old has been a shining light for the Potters, locking down the starting berth and chipping in with nine goals and an assist in 19 games.
Such form combined with Leicester City’s Premier League struggles and need for a striker have raised fears of a winter recall from his Stoke City loan, but it appears that will not be the case.
TEAMtalk reports that the Foxes are not planning on recalling Cannon at this moment in time. Instead, they’re keen on adding a new striker to their ranks, potentially bringing Evan Ferguson in on loan from Brighton.
The plan is for Cannon to spend the season at Stoke City and that is not expected to change.
A welcome boost for the Potters
Stoke City haven’t had all that much to cheer about recently, or at all this season.
They’re on a seven-game winless streak and are just about treading water above the relegation zone as a result. Questions have been asked about manager Narcis Pelach early on after the decision to sack Steven Schumacher in favour of bringing him in.
However, the news of Leicester City’s stance over Cannon does make for a welcome boost.
The Potters will be out to keep influential players in January, rather than losing them. The hope will be some fresh additions to the squad can help them finally make some steps forward as they stare down the barrel at another poor campaign.
Ending 2024 on a high?
Stoke City will be out to end a forgettable 2024 on a high, but they’ve got some tough fixtures ahead.
Next up is a trip to play-off outsiders Sheffield Wednesday this weekend. The Potters then host automatic promotion contenders in back-to-back games, with Leeds United visiting on Boxing Day before Sunderland arrive at the Bet365 Stadium just three days later.
2025 kicks off with another tricky game as Pelach and co head to Burnley.
