On Thursday, we covered claims from Belgium which stated Matija Frigan would be open to joining Sunderland, and KVC Westerlo are willing to let him leave in the winter market.

Germanijak state the Black Cats have stepped forward to sign the 21-year-old as they have ‘fallen in love’ with him.

Sunderland are said to see their present and future in the striker and Régis Le Bris favours his arrival at the club.

In fact, the Croatia U21 international is presented the ‘big wish’ of the Championship side’s manager.

The English club are fourth in the table, trailing second placed Burnley by two points and three behind leaders Leeds United. Sunderland’s leadership believes a few more signings in January will improve their chances of returning to the Premier League.

Germanijak state Sunderland want to sign Frigan on loan with a conditional obligation to buy for €15m if they secure promotion. In other words, they are looking to repeat the formula they used to sign Enzo Le Fée earlier this month.

They do point out an earlier claim from Belgium about Westerlo’s request being €3.5m, but that’s now questioned.

The ‘negotiations are still ongoing’ as the Belgian club don’t want to let him leave easily. Frigan is ‘very interested’ in moving to the Stadium of Light and that could help the Black Cats find an agreement with Westerlo.

Germanijak state the formula of loan with the conditional obligation ‘seems like a real win-win situation’. They add the negotiation may drag for a while even though Sunderland want the deal wrapped up quickly.
