Tottenham Hotspur vice-captain Cristian Romero's future remains uncertain, with reports indicating he could seek an exit if Spurs fail to qualify for next season's Champions League.
That is according to Daily Mail's transfer expert Simon Jones, who claims that Atlético Madrid are keeping a close eye on the Argentine defender's situation.
Despite being under contract with Tottenham until 2027, Romero has reportedly grown frustrated with the club, further fueling speculation about a potential departure.
Cristian Romero's growing frustration at Tottenham
It has been suggested that the player is not happy with the current situation at the club. He is not happy with how the season has been going, and has also been left 'deeply upset' by the way the club has handled his injury.
This is not the first time Romero has voiced his discontent, as he was also critical of the club's hierarchy in December, raising concerns about how the club is being managed behind the scenes.
With Tottenham currently struggling in the bottom half of the Premier League table, their only realistic hope of securing Champions League football is by winning the Europa League.
Failing to do so could make it difficult to retain key players like Romero, who has openly stated his desire to compete at Europe's highest level.
Since arriving in North London from Atalanta in 2021—first on loan before making the move permanent for €52 million—Romero has been a crucial part of Spurs' defence. Named vice-captain ahead of the last season, he started the campaign in excellent form, earning praise from manager Ange Postecoglou.
However, injuries have significantly impacted his season, with a hamstring issue keeping him sidelined for nearly three months. As a result, he has managed just 17 appearances across all competitions, scoring one goal.
Now back to full fitness, Romero will have to play a key role in Tottenham's push for Europa League success. However, if Spurs fail to secure a Champions League spot, they may struggle to keep hold of their World Cup-winning defender, with potential suitors ready to make a move.
