Particularly in Arsenal's 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United, it became abundantly clear that Mikel Artea needs more firepower up front.

Even with Bukayo Saka fit, there was constant talk about the need for Arsenal to buy a striker – the missing piece in their title-challenge.

Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus have both enjoyed some excellent moments this season, but it's undeniable that Arteta's side would also benefit from the addition of a serious goalscorer.

Jesus has scored six goals in six games, but his record in north London beforehand suggests that his is simply a purple patch.

Havertz is enjoying a strong season in front of goal too by his own standards, but his efforts might not be enough to win the Premier League.

Arsenal hatching new plan to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle

That considered, Arsenal were reminded about the difference that someone like Alexander Isak can make when facing Newcastle in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

Isak scored the away side's first at the Emirates, and then also inspired the second with his clever work.

Now, Mail Sport are reporting that Arsenal are still planning to bid for Isak, even if the club will wait until the summer.

Arsenal have been linked with Isak for some time now, interest that Newcastle have always warned away.

However, according to the report mentioned, Arsenal will revive their efforts to sign the Sweden international at the end of the season.

Newcastle will be in a strong position to negotiate given Isak's contract extends until 2028.

But Arsenal have shown a willingness to spend in excess of £100m on a player in the past, as evidenced by their move for Declan Rice.

And according to this information, Arsenal are 'not opposed' to reaching those levels again, even if it would require some 'creativity' elsewhere in the market.

Arsenal also eyeing cheaper Isak alternative

Of course, it's still no foregone conclusion that Arsenal will be able to conclude a deal for the Newcastle star.

Arsenal are thought to have considerable spending power after a few fairly low-key transfer windows, but Eddie Howe's side could still ultimately refuse to sell.

And in that case, Arsenal are eying a cheaper option, the man who was actually supposed to be Viktor Gyokeres' replacement at Sporting CP.

Clearly there's appetite in N5 to keep improving this squad, but Arsenal fans will also want to see some progress this month too.

And in that regard, Arsenal's Saka replacement is already staring them in the face, close by in London.
