Chelsea might be regretting their decision not to give Renato Veiga more opportunities in defence after hearing what the Italian media had to say about his display in the Champions League.
Juventus defeated PSV Eindhoven 2-1 in the first-leg and will now travel to the Netherlands looking to defend their lead.
Veiga has quickly come into Thiago Motta’s side following his loan move from Chelsea and is already impressing in the heart of defence.
The Portugese international looks to be a great addition for the Bianconeri and given the Blues’ struggles at centre-back, fans will be left wondering why Enzo Maresca allowed him to leave so freely.
The Italian media react to Renato Veiga’s display vs PSV
The Italian media have been raving about Renato Veiga’s performance against PSV Eindhoven as the 21-year-old played a key role in the win.
The Chelsea loanee is quickly becoming a fans’ favourite in Turin and another strong showing in the Champions League will only further improve that bond to form.
Tuttomercattoweb gave him a 6.5/10 and wrote: “Among the new signings on the pitch today, he is certainly the one who seems most appropriate. Always on the ball, his attitude is one that Motta likes.”
There was another 6.5/10 from Calciomercato: “The performance tells us why Motta is making these choices. Veiga knows how to be tough when needed, and he knows how to set up. Above all, he knows how to set up.”
Football Italia gave him a 7/10 and said: “Pumped up the fans early in the game. He looked confident on the ball and one-on-one duels.”
Veiga chose to leave Chelsea to play centre-back as his former boss Maresca saw him more as midfielder and didn’t give him many chances at the back.
But the youngster looks to be proving the Italian coach wrong given the reviews he received from the Italian press after Juve beat PSV.
Renato Veiga’s Juventus stats vs PSV
Veiga appeared to be comfortable playing out from the back for Motta’s side as he managed the second-highest number of touches from a Juve player.
