Paul Robinson has described returning to Watford as the club’s Assistant Coach as a “dream come true”.

The club legend who made 252 appearances in the Hornets’ defence has signed up to become a part of Tom Cleverley’s backroom team.

“It’s a dream come true to come back to the club where it all started for me,” he told watfordfc.com.

“I’m absolutely delighted to get through the door and can’t wait to get started and help Tom and Damon [Lathrope], and try and move this club forward.

“Tom just picked the phone up and asked what I was doing. When Tom calls and Watford comes calling, it’s very hard to turn those opportunities down.”

Robinson added that conversations with Cleverley over the past days had helped him gain an understanding of what the Head Coach is looking for.

“It’s just an exciting time, it’s great to be a part of it,” he added.

“For me it was a no-brainer. You hear a lot of good things about what Tom’s doing and I want to be a part of that. I want to help him, I want to pass on my knowledge.

“I want to help the players as well, we’ve got a good group of players here.”

There is a nice symmetry for Robinson as his Hornets debut was against Luton Town in 1996 and it will be the same opponents in his first game in the dugout on Saturday.

“It’s not a bad one is it?” he said. “Memories always come flashing back and my debut was made against the local rivals.

“It’s a great game. The atmosphere will be fantastic, the players know what’s coming and they know what to expect.

“It’s about what we do, not what they do.”
