Hassan excludes Emam, Hegazi & Elneny from AFCON qualifiers squad

The trio of Emam Ashour, Ahmed Hegazi and Mohamed Elneny are the most notable absentees from Egypt's squad for their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Mauritania.

Coach Hossam Hassan confirmed a 24-man list for the double fixture against Mauritania which saw the exclusion of Emam, Hegazi and Elneny, though the Zamalek duo of Mohamed Awwad and Nabil Emad return after their outstanding performance in the CAF Super Cup match against Al Ahly.

Hossam has also selected six foreign-based players, five players from Al Ahly, five players from Zamalek, and eight players from other domestic league teams.

The Pharaohs have an opportunity to secure their place in the next AFCON if they manage to get the six points out of the next two matches against Mauritania.

Egypt tops the group with six points from two wins over Cape Verde and Botswana and they hope to maintain their winning run in the qualifiers against the Lions of Chinguetti, who are second in the group with three points.

The top two teams in the group will secure direct qualification for the 2025 AFCON, scheduled to be held in Morocco.

The Pharaohs host Mauritania on 11 October before facing them four days later away from home.
