Stade Malien, Zamalek & Berkane progress in Confederation Cup

Friday's action in the CAF Confederation Cup saw Stade Malien, Zamalek and RS Berkane become the first trio of clubs to advance into the group stage, after home triumphs in the return legs of their second round qualifying ties.

Stade Malien overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit by defeating Liberia's Paynesville 3-1 in Bamako, courtesy of first-half goals from Moctar Cisse, Soumaila Magassouba and Souleymane Drame.

Mark Paye scored in the second stanza for the visitors to ensure a tense end to the contest, but ultimately Les Stade were able to advance 3-2 on aggregate.

In Cairo, Zamalek added to their 1-0 first-leg advantage by beating Kenya's Police FC 2-1 (3-1 on aggregate). Zizo and Nasser Maher netted for the White Knights, while Jesse Were scored a consolation goal for the East African visitors.

Finally, in Berkane, RSB were already in charge of their tie against Benin's Dadje thanks to a 2-0 triumph in Cotonou last weekend, and they were in a ruthless mood on Friday night, running up a 5-0 (7-0 on aggregate) score line to emphatically secure progression.

Haytam Manaout, Mateus Criciuma, Ayoub Khairi and Issoufou Dayo all found the back of the net for the Oranges, who are two-time champions of the Confederation Cup.

The Confederation Cup continues today, Saturday 21 September, with three matches across the continent: Sekhukhune United v CD Lunda Sul, CS Constantine v Nsoatreman, and CS Afaxien v Rukinzo.
