Chelsea have been handed a boost with Enzo Fernandez expected to return to action quicker than expected according to journalist Matt Law.

The Blues were very light in midfield for their win against Wolves on Monday night with both Romeo Lavia and Fernandez missing.

Enzo Maresca was unable to name a midfielder on the bench and Chelsea are assessing whether to recall Lesley Ugochukwu from his loan spell at Southampton.

Fernandez expected to return quickly

In the absence of both Fernandez and Laiva, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was handed a first Premier League start, although it's unclear if he will still be at the club come the end of the window.

Both Fernandez and Lavia missed training last Friday ahead of the Wolves game and speaking after the win Maresca didn't have the most positive of updates.

However, Law has provided a more positive update in The Telegraph and reported that Fernandez is set for a quick return to action, but things are looking less good for Lavia, who according to the report is expected to be missing for weeks.

Luckily Chelsea didn't miss the duo against Wolves, but they will be desperately hoping Fernandez can be back for Saturday's huge game against Manchester City.

The World Cup winner is arguably in the best form of his Chelsea career at this point in time, although Maresca believes he can be more clinical in front of goal.

Fernandez has three goals and four assists in 20 league games this campaign and is a vital part of the team under Maresca.

Given how light Chelsea currently are in midfield it doesn't make sense as to why Ugochukwu hasn't been recalled, although The Athletic recently reported that's now unlikely given he's playing more regularly at Southampton.

A lot of strain is being placed on Moises Caicedo who is in danger of being run into the ground and the Blues will be hoping he doesn't pick up any injuries otherwise they really will have a big problem.
