Nottingham Forest have made a number of high class signings over the last couple of summers, but it looks as if they missed out on what could have been one of their best back in 1989.

Nuno Espirito Santo has been praised for his tactical work on the field, but it’s the signings he’s made that have really paid dividends for Nottingham Forest.

Nikola Milenkovic and Elliot Anderson are the two standouts. The former has gone from being relatively unknown to being one of the most highly-rated central defenders in the Premier League.

Newcastle United have already registered an interest in Milenkovic, and they’re full of regret that they had to let Anderson leave due to PSR issues.

Murillo is another name worth mentioning, though he joined in the summer of 2023.

Interestingly, there could have been another brilliant bit of business conducted back in 1989, but a now Arsenal invincible ended up joining another team despite talks with Nottingham Forest.

Martin Keown admits he was in talks to join Nottingham Forest

Martin Keown had a decision to make back in 1989 when he was at Aston Villa, with Everton, Manchester United, Derby County and Nottingham Forest all interested.

He decided to join Everton and appeared 108 times for the Toffees, before moving on to bigger and better things, like winning three Premier League titles and becoming an Arsenal invincible.

It was a lot closer than just interest from Nottingham Forest as Martin Keown has revealed that he was actually in talks with the Reds.

Speaking on the Peter Crouch podcast, here’s what Keown had to say when speaking about an

“We need to find who am I playing with, you might tell Man United, you might tell Derby, Forest, all the clubs I was in talks with.”

What a signing Martin Keown would have been

Martin Keown played a whopping 800 times for club and country in his career which spanned 20 years.

It’s safe to say he is best known for his time at Arsenal where he won 10 trophies, including the 2003-04 Premier League, as part of the Invincibles.

Of course, the Nottingham Forest interest came before those successful times at Highbury, so he was relatively under the radar, but still interesting to think about looking back.
