Bruno Lage explains Wolves spell gave him fresh awareness – "Part of any coach's experience"

Bruno Lage somewhat landed on his feet in the summer.

After a very short but torrid period in Brazil with Botafogo, he was sacked in early October 2023. Out of work for almost a year, the manager was appointed by Benfica in September of this year after they dispensed with Roger Schmidt.

Lage had been sacked by Botafogo on October 3rd, a year and a day after being sacked by Wolves.

The spell with Wolves had lasted longer than the three month Brazilian adventure, and it certainly wasn’t all bad in England for the manager. However, he failed to transition the team to do what he wanted and that was ultimately going to be the end of that.

The 48-year-old currently has Benfica third in Liga Portugal, but this week his attention turns to the Champions League and a match against Eredivisie club Feyenoord.

Lage isn’t in his first spell at Benfica, having even won the league with them in 2019, but he’s been asked how he’s grown since, and that saw the manager refer to the experience he picked up whilst at Wolves.

A Bola quote him as saying: “Now, my time in the Premier League as head coach gave me experiences that I didn't have before, but that's part of any coach's experience. The more experience we have, the more we will learn based on the results. The way I work, we learn a lot from the assessments we make of our opponents, but above all from our own team.

“We don't go into the next game without understanding very well the level at which the team is performing at each moment and also understanding whether a certain strategy was implemented or not.”

Shame he didn’t pick up a little charisma.
