Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe’s next role looks to have already been identified after he ended his club’s long wait for major silverware.

Howe guided the Magpies to victory over Premier League leaders Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday (16 March) to secure the club’s first domestic trophy in 70 years.

Having done that the 47-year-old will now be looking to guide his side into a Champions League spot by the end of this season.

Beyond that though, the Newcastle boss is now being heavily touted as the successor for Thomas Tuchel with England.

‘Eddie Howe to be next England manager’

Even in the lead-up to the Cup final, there were discussions about Howe taking charge of the Three Lions in the future.

Simon Jordan suggested Howe will take charge of England after the Magpies look to move on to a manager who can win them silverware on a consistent basis.

Nicky Butt meanwhile claimed the Newcastle boss is becoming “hot property” and should have been given the national team job ahead of Tuchel.

The German is only due to take charge of his first game as England manager in a World Cup qualifier against Albania on Friday (21 March).

BBC chief football writer Phil McNulty though, also believes Howe will replace Tuchel in that role in the near future.

After being asked in a Q&A on the BBC Sport website on 18 March if winning the Carabao Cup means the Newcastle boss is now qualified to take charge of England, McNulty wrote: “Of course the Carabao Cup is a major trophy and everything Eddie Howe has done at Newcastle United marks him down as a future – probably the next – England manager.

“I was surprised there was not more of a push for him by the FA last time, but they clearly made a decision to go with the best available coach with a track record of success, irrespective of nationality. And, in their eyes, that was Thomas Tuchel.”

Newcastle United to be worried by England claims

Football Insider Verdict

It has recently been reported that Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan wants Howe to be the club’s manager long-term.

As a result, the fact that the 47-year-old is being touted to take over with the Three Lions will be a major concern around St James’ Park.

Tuchel has only signed an 18-month contract with the FA, meaning he could leave the role at the end of the next World Cup.

Consequently it may not be long before England come calling for Howe, and he may find the opportunity to manage his country hard to turn down.

Newcastle have seen throughout his time in charge of the club just how good a manager he is, so losing him so soon into what feels like a major long-term project would be a big blow.

With that in mind, they will be desperate for Tuchel to succeed with England to earn himself an extended stay in that role.

Meanwhile, a new contract for Howe at Newcastle to ward off potential suitors may also have to be on the agenda.
