Arsenal look set for a busy summer on the transfer front as Mikel Arteta and Edu look to strengthen their squad.

The Gunners have improved over the past few years, going from a team struggling to even reach the top four to a regular Premier League title challenger.

Next season, Arsenal will be eager to get the job done and finally win the title for the first time since 2004.

The Gunners have been linked with many top players in recent weeks, including one of the most highly sought-after defenders in Europe at present.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has shared an exciting development for Arsenal fans, with the club now said to be in direct talks over his signature.

Arsenal in direct talks with Bologna over Riccardo Calafiori

The player in question is Bologna’s Riccardo Calafiori and, according to Romano’s X account, Arsenal are making great progress on that front.

“After Riccardo Calafiori's green light to move and contract, Arsenal have made direct contact with Bologna,” wrote Romano.

“Talks between clubs have started. No issues on Calafiori's contract terms, up to the clubs now. Arsenal currently ahead, no bid from Chelsea so far.”

Arsenal making good progress for Calafiori

Speculation involving Arsenal and Calafiori has been positive in recent days, and this latest development will be music to Gunners fans’ ears.

At just 22 years of age, the Italian has already been described as "one of the best” left-footed defenders in the world by Romano.

Calafiori is a great modern-day defender, registering seven goal contributions in 30 Serie A appearances last season and impressing at the back as Bologna qualified for the Champions League.

According to Football Italia, Bologna value him at €40-50million (£34-43million), which isn’t a particularly huge amount for such a talented young defender.

Although Arsenal’s defence was solid last term, no club can rest on their laurels, and Calafiori would certainly improve their XI and their strength in depth.
