Tottenham midfielder James Maddison took to social media after a stellar performance in Spurs’ 3-2 win over Hoffenheim in the Europa League.
The match got off to a flying start as Maddison scored within just three minutes, expertly controlling a long ball from Pedro Porro before finishing with composure.
The England international then showcased his playmaking abilities by capitalising on a defensive error from the German side, winning possession and setting up Heung-Min Son for Tottenham's second goal.
Hoffenheim fought back in the second half, with Anton Stach reducing the deficit to 2-1. Son then restored the’ two-goal cushion with his second strike of the evening, though the German side managed a late consolation goal.
After the game, the 28-year-old took to Instagram to reflect on the performance, posting: “Proud of the boys tonight. Not always perfect, but you can never take winning away in Europe for granted. Sticking together in adverse moments is important.”
Tottenham need James Maddison to stay consistent amid season struggles
Maddison has been key for his side during what has been a challenging campaign. The midfielder has contributed nine goals and six assists in 31 appearances this season, showcasing his quality despite the team's poor form.
However, despite impressive underlying stats, he has faced criticism from some pundits, who argue he has yet to fully prove himself under Ange Postecoglou.
Tottenham's struggles are evident, with the team languishing in 15th place in the Premier League—just eight points clear of relegation-threatened Ipswich Town.
This win against Hoffenheim has lifted them to sixth in their Europa League group, ensuring they remain in contention for automatic qualification to the Round of 16.
Football Insider Verdict
While their domestic form leaves much to be desired, Maddison's confidence and form—exemplified in his performance against Hoffenheim—can be key to salvaging their season.
The England international often bears the brunt of criticism, sometimes even by his own fans, as the team's struggles can't be placed solely at his feet. With his quality, he remains one of the bright spots in a tough season.
Maddison will be looking to carry this momentum into Tottenham's next Premier League fixture at home to Leicester on 26 January, as they aim to turn their domestic fortunes around.
In other news, Dejan Kulusevski could leave Tottenham if the club are not careful, according to a former player.
