Stefan Borson has reacted to a “surprise” document reveal relating to Man City owner Sheikh Mansour’s investment at the Etihad.

City Football Group submitted their confirmation statement on 23 January, backdated to 10 January on Companies House, revealing that 47.6million new shares were allotted to Newton (Sheikh Mansour’s company) that had previously been thought to have gone to investment firm Silver Lake.

The news came as a surprise to Borson as he said “expectation was that new money put in by a further Silver Lake subscription.”

When asked to elaborate, Borson replied on X: “During 2024, City Football Group raised £420m of new money to pay for things like the new stand and working capital. It was all put in by Newton and not Silver Lake thereby diluting the Silver Lake shareholding.”

Man City January transfers a response to awful form

Football Insider Verdict

Despite preferring to do their transfer business in the Summer [The Mirror], the Sky Blues have “torn-up” their blueprint for success by making three huge signings in January.

Omar Marmoush has signed from Frankfurt, Abdukodir Khusanov from RC Lens and Vitor Reis from Palmeiras.

All three players have been brought in to give City a boost to what has been a dreadful season, with the club in danger of failing to qualify for the Champions League knockouts and sitting fifth in the Premier League.

One of the most impressive elements of Pep Guardiola’s reign in Manchester, has been his ability to consistently motivate a team that has won everything.

A key element to that, has been making the right signing at the right time, a big motivator for a footballer isn’t always a trophy, or how much money they earn, sometimes, it’s about competition for a starting place.

Guardiola knows that better than most, and his transfers have often had a duality to them, both to strengthen the squad, but also to encourage a key player to push themselves to improve (Akanji joining to challenge Stones and Dias, Rodri joining to challenge Fernandinho).

However, City do not have the luxury of waiting till the summer to integrate their new players, poor defensive displays have made Reis and Khusanov necessary now, and the failure to replace Julian Alvarez in the Summer has meant no opportunity to rotate Erling Haaland out of the team.

In other news, Man City may face another battle with the Premier League soon.
