'Never': Jamie Carragher says Sean Dyche has always done something very odd at Everton he's never understood
Today at 09:15 AM
Since taking over the Everton job last year, Sean Dyche’s body of work has been commendable.
When Sean Dyche replaced Frank Lampard in January 2023, the Toffees were languishing in 19th place.
By the end of the season, the former Burnley boss managed to steer Everton to safety by leading them to 17th place.
In the following campaign, the Merseyside-based club managed to finish 15th, despite suffering an eight-point deduction in total due to breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
This season, Everton sit in 16th place, albeit being just three points above the relegation zone.

However, Jamie Carragher has noticed that Sean Dyche has had one habit in particular since heading to Everton that he has always failed to understand.
Jamie Carragher questions why Sean Dyche rarely plays new signings at Everton
During The Overlap’s Fan Debate, the Liverpool legend expressed that in his view, Dyche has always rarely played the new signings he has made during his time at Everton.
Carragher explained: “You know what I think about Sean Dyche and Everton, from when he came in, any player he’s bought virtually, they’re still not in his first XI. Maybe [Iliman] N’Diaye this season.”
“[Jordan] Pickford was there before he came, the left-back, Vitaliy [Mykolenko] was there, [Jarrad] Branthwaite was there, [James] Tarkowski was there, [Dwight] McNeil was there, [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin was there.”
Jamie Carragher continued: “Was [Idrissa] Gueye there? Gueye was there, Michael Keane was already there but they haven’t spent loads of money but you’ve bought a lot of players. It’s about five or six players, £15 to £20 million but they don’t play! The striker, [Youssef] Chermiti, £15, £30 million on Beto!”
“He’s [Chermiti] played about four games.”

How many matches have Dyche signings played at Everton this season?
Ultimately, Sean Dyche’s counterargument to Jamie Carragher’s claim would be that he only names the XI that he feels is best fit to win any game of football.
At Goodison Park, Dyche has made a total of 12 signings, including four players on loan, out of which 11 still remain at Everton.
SIGNINGS (INCLUDING LOANS) | JOINED | MATCHES STARTED IN ALL COMPETITIONS |
ILIMAN NDIAYE | 2024/2025 | 15 |
JAKE O’BRIEN | 2024/2025 | 2 |
TIM IROEGBUNAM | 2024/2025 | 5 |
JESPER LINDSTROM | 2024/2025 | 8 |
ARMANDO BROJA | 2024/2025 | 0 |
OREL MANGALA | 2024/2025 | 8 |
YOUSSEF CHERMITI | 2023/2024 | 0 |

JACK HARRISON | 2023/2024 | 41 |
BETO | 2023/2024 | 14 |
ASHLEY YOUNG | 2023/2024 | 43 |
It seems like there is some truth to Jamie Carragher’s statement.
Apart from Ashley Young, Jack Harrison and Ndiaye, Sean Dyche is seemingly unconvinced about several of the signs that Everton have made.
Dyche will need to utilise several of such fringe players, if some of his most reliable players suffer knocks or long-term injuries, which could be a nightmarish scenario for him.
