Arsenal are still scouring the transfer market for potential signings as we edge closer to deadline day.

A deal to bring Mikel Merino to the Emirates Stadium is edging closer to completion, with the Spaniard set to become Mikel Arteta’s second summer signing after Riccardo Calafiori.

The Gunners have also been linked with attacking reinforcements, with Paul Merson urging Arsenal to sign Alexander Isak to spearhead them to the Premier League trophy.

Isak may be unattainable at this stage of the transfer window, but if reports from Portugal are to be believed, Arsenal have been told what they must do to sign Viktor Gyokeres before deadline day.

According to Record, Sporting will only part with Gyokeres if his £86m release clause is triggered after a deadline set by the club for the sale of the Swedish striker expired on the 15th of August.

The report also states that such an offer is ‘not foreseeable’ at this stage of the transfer window from Arsenal are any other club, indicating that Gyokeres is set to remain at the Jose Alvalade Stadium, at least for the time being.

The 26-year-old scored 43 goals in 50 games across all competitions for Sporting last season, establishing himself as one of Europe’s leading marksmen.

Do Arsenal need another attacker?

Bukayo Saka is the only player in the Arsenal attack who has produced the desired end product and consistency for Arteta.

Gabriel Jesus scored just four Premier League goals last season which simply isn’t good enough, while Kai Havertz’s tally of 13, although creditable, is still not up to the required standard for a striker leading the line for a Premier League title-chasing team.

Gabriel Martinelli is clearly a fantastic talent but didn’t really set the world alight last season with his tally of six league goals.

Leandro Trossard, on the other hand, impressed in his debut season at the club and scored 12 Premier League goals as a squad player.

Looking at the grander picture, a world-class striker seems like the missing piece of the puzzle for Arsenal.

Gyokeres certainly fits the bill but clubs are likely to be put off by his £86m release clause, especially at this stage of the transfer window.
