Mikel Arteta is close to making his first signing of the winter transfer window at Arsenal.

Fans would presumably prefer to see a new forward arrive before anybody else – after both Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus suffered serious injuries.

However, a precocious central midfielder is seemingly on his way – with Arsenal close to signing Sverre Nypan in a £12m deal from Rosenborg.

The 18-year-old is also being pursued by the City Football Group, although the Gunners look set to fend off competition to secure the Norwegian wonderkid.

As aforesaid, the agreement for Sverre Nypan is believed to be worth £12m – although Arsenal could only have to use £900,000 of their allocated budget for the winter transfer window if they beat Girona in the UEFA Champions League.

UEFA Champions League prize money would pay for bulk of Sverre Nypan fee

If Arsenal can defeat Girona in the final league game of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night, the resulting prize money would pretty much pay for the Norway U21 international.

As UEFA revealed in an official document back in March, each victory in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League is worth £1.8m to participating clubs.

However, there is also a £9.3m prize for those who qualify for the Round of 16 phase.

Therefore – with victory over Girona – Arsenal would secure themselves £11.1m in prize money, with the Gunners currently sitting third in the UEFA Champions League and guaranteed to be in the Round of 16 if they defeat the Spanish side.

Coincidentally, Girona also want Nypan – so it would be especially sweet for Arsenal if they beat the Spaniards and use the resulting prize money to pinch one of their targets.

Arsenal beat Manchester United to Sverre Nypan

TBR Football understand Manchester United were keen to sign Nypan heading into the winter transfer window.

The Red Devils are believed to have chased the Rosenborg No.41 for years, having first spotted him at the age of 14.

Barcelona are also known admirers of Nypan.

Therefore – if Arsenal can push this £12m deal over the line – it would represent a real coup for Mikel Arteta.
