Paul Mitchell has a real point to prove at Newcastle in the January transfer window.

Newcastle's summer window was underwhelming to say the least. The Tyneside outfit failed to make any major signings, and they've come into the new campaign arguably weaker than they were last season after selling Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson.

However, it wasn't for a lack of trying.

Newcastle worked hard to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in the summer, but, sadly for Eddie Howe, a deal couldn't be done.

Guehi remains a target for Newcastle, and according to Craig Hope, speaking on his YouTube channel, this is a situation that could move quickly at the beginning of January.

Newcastle could move for Marc Guehi in January

Hope shared what he knows about Newcastle's interest in Guehi.

The journalist shared some interesting insight into how Crystal Palace view this deal and what could happen.

Ultimately, Hope said that Guehi is still a target, and Newcastle could move for the England star early in the window.

"Is it time for Newcastle to make a statement signing?" Hope was asked.

"Will they go back in for Guehi, if they are to do that, and I believe that's still on the agenda, I think we will have our answer within the first week. We won't have a situation like the summer where Newcastle go in for £40m/50m, then in the last week of January we talk about failed £60m/70m moves.

"Guehi only has 18 months left on his deal, and I believe that some, and this is information from inside Crystal Palace, believe that it would've made better business sense to sell Guehi in the summer, but Steve Parish didn't agree and he strung Newcastle along to a degree.

"Will it make sense for Palace to sell Guehi in January? I think it will. Certainly the asking price won't be anywhere near the £60/65/70m it got to. I think we might see movement, especially if there is an acceptance that things could move quickly without the public drama and the farce that was the saga of the summer that never happened. Will they go back for Marc Guehi? It's definitely on the agenda, I know that much."

How has Marc Guehi performed this season?

Newcastle ignited their interest in Guehi after some standout performances at Euro 2024, but has he carried his performances into this season?

Guehi was one of the best players at the Euros, but Crystal Palace are struggling this season as they sit 18th in the Premier League.

However, individually, Guehi has still been shining. In fact, Joe Cole was recently full of praise for Guehi.

"He is so assured, he is so calm. If you look at him, he is never ruffled. I think he is at a stage where he has cut out a lot of his mistakes already, so he is getting better and better," Cole said.

"He is a leader. He is the captain of the side. He is a top, top player. I think he is England's, if not number one, number two centre-half. John Stones and Marc Guehi now have solidified that. I think he is top, top-drawer."

It's not hard to see why Newcastle are so keen on Guehi, and this could be a signing that pushes Eddie Howe's side to that next level if they can get it over the line.
