Barnsley have made the decision to sack Darrell Clarke as head coach with the club eight points adrift of the play-off places.

Barnsley have not had the best of seasons and have failed to reach the heights of the last campaign. Last season, the Tykes earned a play-off place before being beaten by Bolton Wanderers in the semi-finals.

That was their second play-off defeat in a row, condemning them to a third-straight season in League One. However, after losing a lot of their squad in the summer, it was always going to be a tough task for Barnsley to challenge this season.

However, despite still having an outside chance of the play-offs, the club have announced the decision to sack Darrell Clarke.

Conor Hourihane is to lead the team for the rest of the campaign. With that said, here are three bosses Barnsley must look at to replace Clarke in the summer…

Luke Williams

Williams has been out of work for a few weeks after being sacked by Swansea City. The 43-year-old had a 53-game stint in Wales but after showing signs of promise, he failed to take them to the next step.

He did a fine job with Notts County, leading them back to the EFL. In their first season back in the Football League, he had them chasing promotion to League One.

Williams would be an ambitious move for Barnsley. However, he would be quite the coup if he were willing to drop down.

Rob Edwards

Edwards was a name being tipped with Premier League jobs not long ago. The former Luton Town boss had done an excellent job with the Hatters, earning them promotion to the top-flight two years ago.

However, after such a poor season back in the Championship this campaign, his stock has dropped. He left them midway through this season as they were rock-bottom of the Championship.

Barnsley should look to swoop in for Edwards while his stock is low. He was excellent with Forest Green in the lower tiers before his move to Watford.

Des Buckingham

A man who earned promotion from League One last season, Des Buckingham took Oxford United to the Championship, beating Bolton Wanderers in the play-off final.

Buckingham was doing a decent job with Oxford in the second tier too, but was sacked with the club still outside the bottom three.

He would be a good long-term option for Barnsley. They need to give someone time to rebuild after two quickfire changes recently.
