Shrewsbury Town are poised to keep hold of Chelsea loanee Leo Castledine for the rest of this season, as detailed in a report by The Athletic.
Shrewsbury Town landed the youngster on a temporary basis last summer to bolster their ranks. He has since made 25 appearances in all competitions for the League One side, chipping in with two goals.
Castledine, 19, was given the green light to leave Chelsea on loan to get some experience under his belt. His contract at Stamford Bridge expires in the summer of 2027.
In this latest update regarding his future, The Athletic claim the Blues have ‘considered’ recalling the prospect from the Shrews this winter. However, they have now made the decision to keep him where he is until the summer.
Shrewsbury Town are currently sat in 22nd place in the table and are inside the drop zone along with Cambridge United, Burton Albion and Crawley Town.
Shrewsbury Town loan boost regarding Leo Castledine
Keeping hold of Castledine is a boost for Shrewsbury Town as they look to avoid relegation to League Two.
They are currently six points from safety under former Wycombe Wanderers and QPR boss Gareth Ainsworth.
Castledine has played once for Chelsea’s first-team so far in his career.
He has been a key player for the Premier League outfit at different youth levels over recent times.
The attacking midfielder has scored 14 goals in 46 games for their Under-21’s altogether, as well as gaining 10 assists.
Castledine re-joined Chelsea in 2020 after a spell away at AFC Wimbledon.
After signing him for Shrewsbury Town, their former manager Paul Hurst said, as per a report by BBC Sport: “We are really pleased because he’s one we’ve been looking at for a long time and initially we weren’t sure he’d be allowed to come out on loan.
“There was also word that he may end up in the Championship, so we’re delighted to get him in and had to be patient on this one.”
Shrewsbury Town latest
Chelsea will keep tabs on Castledine’s progress at Shrewsbury Town over the coming months.
It would have been a risk to bring him back and send him somewhere else where he may not have got as many minutes.
Therefore, letting him stay with the Shrews is the most sensible decision they could have made.
Ainsworth’s men face an away trip to Charlton Athletic this weekend.
