'Could go on a big run' – Birmingham City vs Lincoln City prediction: The72
Today at 03:44 AM
Birmingham City and Lincoln City meet in the FA Cup this weekend as the focus briefly switches away from League One football.
Birmingham City come into their FA Cup clash with Lincoln City perhaps hopeful of going on a bit of a run in Britain’s highest-profile domestic competition.
League One football is the priority but with the squad depth the Blues have, they should be hopeful of defeating third-tier rivals here. BCFC have already overcome Sutton United and Blackpool to progress to the third round stage.
Chris Davies’ side come into the game having gone unbeaten in their last nine League One games, defeating Wigan Athletic 3-0 last time out.
As for Lincoln City, a dismal turn has seen them slip out of the play-off picture under Michael Skubala.
However, they’ve got history in the FA Cup and may be hoping another run can breathe life back into their campaign having taken just six points from the last 30 available in League One.
After defeating Chesham United with ease by a score of 4-0 in the opening round of the cup, the Imps played out a thriller against Crawley Town at the end of November. They just about scraped through, winning 4-3 on the road
Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…
James Ray
“Birmingham City have the squad depth available to make a run in the FA Cup. Of course, promotion from League One is the priority, but I reckon the message within the club will be to go for it given the profile of the competition and the attention a run could draw.
“As such, Davies might still field a largely first-choice XI, perhaps with some changes here and there.
“Lincoln City aren’t blessed with such depth and with the form they’re in, confidence is low. A cup run would change that, but they’ve got a real tough test here.
“I’ll be backing BCFC to win here and they could go on a big run.”
Prediction: Birmingham City 3-1 Lincoln City
Harry Mail
“Birmingham City can afford to make changes for this tie and still put out a strong team.
“Gaining promotion is obviously the Blues’ priority but a good cup run would be exciting for their fans.
“They also have some fringe players who would benefit from the game time.
“As for Lincoln City, their form hasn’t been great recently and they need a bit of a confidence booster. I can’t see them getting anything from the Midlands this weekend though and can see them falling to a loss.”
Prediction: Birmingham City 2-0 Lincoln City
