Lewis, who is from Suffolk, made 538 appearances and most recently worked as a trainer goalkeeper at Manchester United.

He is now launched his own GKHQ Academy and has said, as per the Daily Record: “I probably made the decision to hang up my gloves about three months ago. I had been signed as a training goalkeeper with Manchester United. Being in at United was fantastic but then that contract ended in the summer. I hadn’t played competitive games for nearly two years and so when I was out of contract I wasn’t high up on anybody’s list to go and play. I thought to myself: ‘Do I want to drop down the leagues and play? The answer was ‘No’.”

Lewis started out at Norwich City and rose up through their academy ranks.

He was a regular for the Canaries at various different youth levels but never played for their first-team. Instead, he was loaned out from Carrow Road to Stockport County and Morecambe to get some experience under his belt.

Peterborough United signed him on a permanent basis in 2007 and he was given the green light to leave East Anglia.

Lewis went on to play 190 games for the Posh and helped them rise from League Two to the Championship during his time at London Road.

Cardiff City subsequently landed him in 2012 and they spent a year in the Premier League during his days in Wales.

However, he was mainly used as a back-up by the Bluebirds and was loaned out to Blackpool and Fulham.

The ‘keeper was the Tangerines’ number one during his temporary stint and played 36 matches, 34 of which came in the league.

What next?

Lewis’ last team was Aberdeen up in the Scottish Premiership.

He spent seven years with the Dons but left last summer and has now decided to hang up his gloves.
