Oli Norwood has said is was ‘evident’ that he would be leaving Sheffield United this past summer following Chris Wilder’s return to Bramall Lane.

Norwood, 33, has since dropped into League One to join Stockport County.

He has opened up about his exit from Bramall Lane and has said in an interview with Sky Sports: “It was quite evident quite early when the manager came back, to be honest. I rarely played, so I think it was quite obvious I wouldn’t be staying. But it’s football, isn’t it? Different managers have different opinions and pick different teams. I’d have liked to have played more, but it is what it is.”

He added: “When you have a connection with a club and you play so many games for a club, you want to stay there, but it wasn’t to be. You can’t cry about it. The best six years of my career were definitely at Sheffield United. I loved every minute of being there. The messages since leaving from the supporters have been amazing. When you leave, you want to be spoken about really well and I’ve got that.”

Departed Sheffield United man on exit

Sheffield United signed Norwood in 2018 on an initial loan deal that was later made permanent.

He became a key player for the Blades and was a good servant to the South Yorkshire outfit.

The Burnley-born man went on to play 250 games in all competitions and chipped in with 11 goals.

Norwood helped Sheffield United gain promotion from the Championship twice during his time there but saw his game time dry up in the latter stages of the last campaign under Wilder, hence why he was allowed to head out the exit door in late June when his contract expired.

The ex-Northern Ireland international has also had spells in the past at Manchester United, Huddersfield Town, Reading, Brighton and Hove Albion and Fulham.

What now?

Norwood weighed up his options after leaving Sheffield United and ended up joining Stockport County in the third tier in a surprise move after a trial at Edgeley Park.

The Hatters won the League Two title earlier this year under Dave Challinor and handed him a three-year deal.
