Exeter City boss Gary Caldwell has labelled Crystal Palace loanee Joe Whitworth as ‘sensational’ following their 2-0 away win at Shrewsbury Town last night.

Exeter City have risen up to 4th in the League One table following their victory against the Shrews. Kamari Doyle and Josh Magennis got their goals.

Whitworth, 20, has become the first goalkeeper in the Grecians’ history to keep five clean sheets in a row.

Caldwell has said, as per the official club website: “Joe Whitworth is just doing his job, and I can’t speak highly of him. He is a sensational character, for someone so young his mentality and professionalism has been first class. Even early when he made mistakes, we always had belief in him.

“It’s the first time this club has even kept five clean sheets in a row and that is something we are proud of. The players deserve so much credit, right from the top of the pitch back.”

He added: “The spirit of this group of players and the will to keep a clean sheet, that takes you a long way. That (win) has taken us to fourth, but like I have just said to the players, we haven’t even scratched the surface of our potential with this team.”

Exeter City landed Whitworth over the summer to bolster their goalkeeping department.

He was given the green light to head out the exit door by Crystal Palace on loan to get some more experience under his belt.

The stopper has since made 10 appearances in all competitions for the Grecians, nine of which have come in the league.

Whitworth was on the books at AFC Wimbledon before the Eagles swooped to sign him in 2016.

He has since risen up through the academy ranks of the Premier League outfit and has been a regular for them at various different youth levels.

The England youth international made his first-team debut for the South London club in a league clash against rivals Brighton and Hove Albion in March 2023 and has since played once more.

What now?

Whitworth is in great form for Exeter City and his move to Devon has worked out really well so far.

Caldwell’s men can sit back and watch the rest of the division in action this weekend after their win at Shrewsbury Town.

They are back in action on Tuesday night at home to Reading.
