Sheffield United could pursue a winter deal for Peterborough United forward Ricky-Jade Jones, according to reporter Alan Nixon.
Sheffield United are looking to continue their push for promotion back to the Premier League over the hectic winter period.
A strong January transfer window will be key to their promotion bid. The Blades needed to be busy in the summer and were, signing a host of new stars, but there remains some gaps in the squad despite their impressive campaign to date.
Chris Wilder’s side sit top of the Championship table and will be confident the crux of their current squad can lead them back the top-flight. However, reinforcements are needed heading into the New Year and with several players already linked, another name has appeared on the radar.
Writing on his Patreon, reporter Alan Nixon has said Sheffield United could be among the clubs in the bidding for Peterborough United attacker Ricky-Jade Jones this winter.
Blades fans will remember he was linked with a Bramall Lane switch in the summer. However, he remained with the Posh, despite the fact his contract expires at the end of the ongoing campaign.
Jones’ situation
Jones’ expiring contract at Peterborough United is sure to have plenty of clubs sniffing around. And, heading into January, it’s not a surprise Sheffield United are among them.
Jones can play as a striker or left winger and has 10 goals and three assists to his name across all competitions this season. The electric pace he possesses will make him a danger at any level, so he likely would be attracting admiring glances regardless of his contract situation.
However, Jones might not be the cheap addition some may hope for.
Posh will be entitled to healthy compensation given his age and status as an academy player even if he moves in the summer. The club of course hope for him to sign a new deal, but given the compensation they would be due, that’s an avenue Posh are happy to go down over cashing in this January.
Extra attacking threat
Sheffield United currently have Tyrese Campbell, Kieffer Moore and Rhian Brewster as senior striker options. Youngsters such as Ryan One and Louie Marsh are also on the books.
Of those, Campbell has found the most joy in front of goal. The scoring burden has been shared evenly across attackers and midfielders but Wilder will likely be keen to add extra attacking threat to his ranks this winter, something Jones could offer.
However, it remains to be seen whether a winter move comes to fruition for the forward. If Peterborough United are to stand firm, the Blades will have to call upon other potential targets.
