Craig, 21, was given the green light to make the switch to Oakwell in the summer to get some more experience under his belt. He has since made 16 appearances in all competitions for the South Yorkshire outfit, 14 of which have come in League One.

In this latest update regarding his situation, Football Insider claim he has emerged on the radar of Mansfield Town and Doncaster Rovers this winter.

Spurs have a big decision to make on what to do next with him between now and the end of the January transfer window and will be weighing up what is best for his development.

Craig has been on the books of Spurs for his whole career to date after joining them at the age of 12 from Watford.

He has risen up through the academy ranks of the Premier League outfit and has been a regular for them at various different youth levels.

Barnsley signed him on a temporary basis in July to bolster their options in the middle of the park.

The Scotland youth international signed his first professional contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in May 2021 until 2023. That deal has since been extended further.

He made his first-team debut for the London outfit in May 2023 in a fixture against Leeds United

Craig was loaned out for the first time to Doncaster Rovers just over 12 months ago. He played 20 matches.

He helped Grant McCann’s side reach the play-offs in League Two but they were beaten at the semi-finals stage by Crewe Alexandra.

The youngster then linked up with Barnsley and told their website“It’s been really good so far. I’ve looked around the ground – which is beautiful – a really good stadium. The people I have talked to already have been really welcoming, it’s been good.”

Their sporting director Mladen Sormaz added: “We are extremely pleased to welcome Matty to Oakwell. He is a young player who will provide a different option in the midfield with his ability to regain possession and physicality.”

What now?

Mansfield Town and Doncaster Rovers are admirers and his stint with Barnsley may be cut short.

Spurs need to consider what would be best for him and where he would play the most.
