Stones, 20, is under contract with the League One side until June 2026 so can still play a big part for them down the line.

In this latest update regarding his situation by reporter Nixon on Patreon, Oldham Athletic are keen on luring him back to the National League but the Latics may have to wait before allowing him to head back to Boundary Park.

The youngster currently provides competition and depth to their striking department and letting him go could potentially leave them an option short up top. He can join a non-league team at any point so there is no rush in regards to leaving.

Speaking at the end of August, Wigan Athletic boss Shaun Maloney shared this update on Stones’ situation, as per a report by Wigan Today“I’ll speak to Josh in the next couple of days. I really like him, and what I don’t want to do is anything that will cause him to not have minutes in the next three or four months. But I’m also quite keen that if he wants to stay and fight for a place, then he knows if he does well he will get those minutes here.

“So I’ll leave this to Josh, and I’m definitely not unhappy with him, it’s what he wants to do. If he wants to stay and fight, I’m more than happy for him to do that. Stonesey didn’t make the squad in the last game, there’s things he needs to improve on, but he knows I’m a big fan of what he can do.

“For sure, you can concentrate on what he doesn’t do, but he brings plenty of energy, he can compete incredibly well, he has some big attributes so we’re not in a position to lose him.”

Stones had a spell at Oldham Athletic in the last campaign and scored three goals in four games, as well as chipping in with three assists.

His current club signed him back in 2022 from Guiseley. He has since made 14 appearances for the Latics in all competitions and has found the net on three occasions.

Stones has also had a loan stint away from Wigan Athletic at Ross County in the past to get some experience under his belt.

What now?

A return to Oldham Athletic would boost the player’s development and suit all parties involved.

He needs game time at this stage of his career.

Wigan Athletic drew 0-0 away at Lincoln City this weekend and face Stevenage on Tuesday.
