'Could be movement': Fabrizio Romano teases that Liverpool may be about to swoop in for £19m attacker

Liverpool are yet to make a signing in the January transfer window, though one possible addition this month could come in the form of Olympique Lyonnais star Rayan Cherki.
The Ligue 1 youngster has been linked with the Reds for some time, with Liverpool believed to be interested in Cherki as Arne Slot’s transfer team look to scout out potential attackers for the summer transfer window.
With Luis Diaz wanted by FC Barcelona and Mohamed Salah yet to sign a new Liverpool contract, there’s a real chance that the Reds will have to overhaul their attacking options during the off-season, with Darwin Nunez’s future at Anfield also up in the air.
As a result, Cherki has emerged as a target for Liverpool, yet a move for the 21-year-old forward could come a lot sooner than expected for supporters of the Reds.
Liverpool could make move for Cherki this Janaury
Speaking to GiveMeSport, Fabrizio Romano shared how ‘there could be movement’ from Liverpool for Cherki, with the France youth international having a release clause worth €22.5m (£20m) that could open the door to a move to Anfield.
Romano wrote: “He has a release clause. It’s not a proper clause, but it’s a gentleman’s agreement – made with the president of Olympique Lyon, John Textor, in the summer when he signed a new contract at Olympique Lyon – for €22.5m (£20m). The player is available already now.
“This sort of clause is also valid in the summer, but also now, so it’s a big opportunity for many clubs. Cherki received many calls from Germany, from England, from Italy – many agents who wanted to understand the situation around him. But my information is that at the moment, there is still nothing really close.
“There could be movement with Liverpool at the moment. The appreciation of the player in terms of scouting him has been there, because they’ve been following the player. They are always following talents, but at the moment, I’m not aware of a proper negotiation between Liverpool and Olympique Lyon for Cherki.”

What are Liverpool insiders saying about signing Cherki?
January is an awkward time for any big club to make signings, with Liverpool no exception this month with the Reds yet to make any new additions despite calls from Jamie Carragher to bring in a new defender.
And Liverpool insiders are seemingly dismissive of moving for Cherki this month, with Slot still having arguably the best array of attackers in Europe that have led the Reds to the top of the Premier League and UEFA Champions League standings.
Indeed, Liverpool signing an attacker this January will do little to improve their title chances, and with the summer set to be the time for the major transfers to be made, patience might be needed with supporters when it comes to signing the likes of Cherki.
