Didier Drogba claims Liverpool had a striker who was even better than Erling Haaland

Liverpool have been blessed with some supreme goal scorers throughout their history.

The wonderful strike record Mohamed Salah continues to display has marked him out as the most lethal scorer of a generation at the club.

Salah has now climbed to being the fifth most prolific player in Liverpool’s history in terms of sheer number of goals.

Before Salah, though, there were plenty of former Liverpool players who also threatened to trouble that list.

One of those was Fernando Torres, who was adored during his three-and-a-half spell at Anfield.

In the end, Torres’ record of 81 goals in 142 games cannot hold a candle to that of Salah. And yet, Chelsea legend Didier Drogba clearly holds his former teammate in the highest esteem.

Didier Drogba picks Fernando Torres

Given the manner in which he left the Reds to join Chelsea in 2011, Torres is not considered to be amongst true Liverpool legends. However, there is little question that in top form, few could match the Spanish striker.

Throughout a glittering career the 40-year-old won the World Cup, two European Championships and a Champions League, amongst other gongs.

The latter one in that particular list was secured alongside Drogba while the two were at Chelsea.

So, when asked by GOAL to pick between Torres and a clutch of other, top centre-forwards perhaps it shouldn’t have been a surprise to see the Ivorian go with his old strike partner.

Drogba first chooses the 40-year-old over former Man United pair Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov. “I will always choose my teammate!” he says when also dismissing Robin van Persie’s challenge.

That is then put to the test as current Premier League top scorer Erling Haaland is pitted against Torres. “Okay, teammate, Torres,” says Drogba.

However, the Ivory Coast icon is forced to concede when asked to pick between Thierry Henry and Torres. “Thierry is different, so Thierry,” Drogba admits.

Fernando Torres vs Thierry Henry

Although most people would have ultimately picked Henry over Torres, it was certainly a worthwhile discussion at one point.

Henry is widely regarded as the Premier League’s greatest ever player, but there looked a time when El Nino might run him close.

As injuries robbed him of too much, Torres could never reach those heights in the end.

However, the former Atletico Madrid prospect will console himself with the trophies he won throughout a really impressive career.

Henry can also lay claim to plenty of silverware, though, with both players having won a World Cup and Euros with their country and a Champions League, too.

A tough one with both in their pomp, perhaps, but it’s hard to argue with Didier here.
