With less than two weeks to go for the January transfer window to slam shut, it remains to be seen if Liverpool do any business.

Arne Slot refrained from splashing the cash during his first summer in charge of the club, with Federico Chiesa the only player who walked through the doors at Anfield.

However, the upcoming transfer windows are likely to be different and the Reds will have a bit of time to do business in January.

That said, it appears as if they won’t be signing Fiorentina’s Michael Kayode, with the defender now edging closer to a move to Brentford.

Things have gone well for Liverpool on the pitch so far this season, but off the pitch, contract standoffs with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah have grabbed much of the headlines.

While Salah and Van Dijk are likely to stay, Alexander-Arnold has been linked with a move to Real Madrid as his future continues to hang in the balance.

To prepare for his potential departure, the Reds have been linked with a handful of players.

And Kayode emerged on Liverpool’s radar earlier this season on the back of his strong performances for Fiorentina in Serie A.

But now, it appears as if Brentford have stolen a march on his signing, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that the youngster is edging closer to joining the Premier League side in January.

He wrote on X: “Brentford are closing in on Michael Kayode deal with Fiorentina. Negotiations at final stages after player's green light, key details being clarified in club-to-club talks.”

While Kayode is clearly a talented player who could make a big impact in the Premier League, a move to Liverpool could’ve been too big a step for him at this stage of his career.

Moving to Brentford, on the other hand, could be a good stepping stone for the young defender and if he continues to develop in the same trajectory, Liverpool and other clubs across the continent could position to sign him in a few years.

The Reds’ focus will be to tie down Alexander-Arnold to a new deal but they are running out of time to do so as he has less than six months left on his current contract.
