Liverpool will soon 'break the bank' to get Virgil van Dijk signed to a new deal to keep him at Anfield.

That's according to journalist Marcel van der Kraan, who believes Liverpool will do all in their power to keep the defender from leaving on a free transfer in the summer.

Van Dijk's current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, and he is currently yet to commit to a new extension with Liverpool.

The Reds are very much working on getting him, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold to sign new contracts, although the latter appears set to join Real Madrid instead.

There have, surprisingly, not been similar suitors for Van Dijk or Salah as yet, although that is likely to change the longer the situation is allowed to go on.

While Salah has been scoring and assisting goals for fun at one end, Van Dijk has been back to his imperious best for Liverpool this season, marshalling the defence with a continued run of impressive performances.

He has seemingly been thrilled with the arrival of compatriot Arne Slot, who heads up a quartet of Dutchmen at Liverpool alongside Van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch.

All three of those players have been enjoying fine campaigns and Van der Kraan believes they are now a point of reference for the Netherlands and the Eredivisie as a whole.

"An optimist, like Jan de Jong of the Eredivisie CV, will say that everything is going great in Dutch football," he is quoted as saying in De Telegraaf.

A pessimist will say that our country as a whole is miles away from top football. Anyone who watched the spectacle in the English Premier League during the Christmas period saw real entertainment

"Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch and Virgil van Dijk really started here in the Eredivisie. We didn’t realize at the time that they would become world stars.

"The first (Gakpo) is, according to the latest valuation in the new year, a player worth more than €100m. The second (Gravenberch) is moving quickly in that direction and one of these days they will break open the bank safe for Van Dijk to extend him one more time at Liverpool."
