Liverpool do not have an especially interesting track record when it comes to signing players from South America.

The Reds have certainly had their fair share of success stories from the continent over the years, but never as a result of buying direct from source.

Nevertheless, as Premier League clubs wise up to the fact that there is incredible value to be had when signing from Brazilian and Argentinian clubs, we may start to see Liverpool be a touch more active in this market.

As well as those two dominant nations, though, Ecuador has emerged as a real player in the South American game in recent years.

More specifically, Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle have shown themselves to have a terrific track record of bringing through top quality young players.

And according to journalist David Lynch, the Liverpool owners and recruitment team are looking closely at the club for the next top talent to bring to Anfield.

Joel Ordonez transfer not ruled out

Independiente have become famous in England over recent times as the club who brought through Chelsea man – and former Liverpool target – Moises Caicedo.

And speaking to Anfield Agenda, Lynch says that they have stayed on Liverpool’s radar ever since.

“I know that is a club where Liverpool have been keeping an eye on players for a long time,” he says.

“Moises Caicedo came from there and they were very much aware of him at the point that Brighton pulled him from there. So, clearly that league and that club in particular is somewhere they’re keeping an eye on for young talent that’s coming through.”

Asked about rumours that Liverpool want to sign centre-back Joel Ordonez, who starred for Independiente before joining Club Brugge, Lynch says that it is a possibility.

“I guess with this player, similarly they will have an idea where he’s up to,” says the reporter.

“Whether that translates into them ultimately signing him, it’s all about where the vacancies are in the squad and what they need to do going into the summer. I certainly don’t think he’d be one for January.

“But it’s an interesting name because it’s a young defender and centre-back is an area they’re kind of looking for someone in that mould. So, I would be hard pushed to rule that one out at the moment.”

Liverpool should take a chance on Ordonez

While you can understand Liverpool’s stance on signing players direct from South America, it does mean that they miss out on some big talents.

Reports on Thursday have dismissed a Liverpool move for Franco Mastantuono from River Plate, for example.

But the success of Caicedo and others from the Independiente academy should help the Reds decide over a move for Ordonez.

Besides, the 20-year-old is not in Ecuador anymore, he is already doing well for Club Brugge in Belgium and has been since 2022.

A reported £25m price-tag looks worthy of a gamble and we’re now interested to see where this goes.
