Former Manchester United and Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre has named the club who are ‘best placed’ to win the Champions League title.

Liverpool currently sit top of the table in the league phase of the 2024-25 tournament with a perfect record having won all six of their matches.

But Silvestre feels there is a team from La Liga who are bigger favourites to land the biggest trophy in European club football this term – and it’s not current holders Real Madrid – who have won it a record 15 times.

Silvestre thinks Barcelona will clinch the Champions League title this season under the management of Hansi Flick.

The Catalan club have impressed and are currently top of La Liga, two points ahead of Real Madrid, although they have played an extra game.

In the Champions League, they are second in the league phase, only behind Liverpool, after winning five of their six fixtures so far.

‘Looking at current form, Barcelona are in the best place to take Real Madrid's European crown as we get towards halfway in the season,’ Silvestre told BoyleSports.

‘They are fighting for the title, as Liverpool are doing in England and their squad depth will be so important.

‘I'd give the advantage to Barcelona before of their history in the competition but also Hansi Flick's experience which is far above Arne Slot.’

According to bookmakers Sky Bet, Liverpool are the current favourites to win this season’s Champions League at odds of 4/1.

Real Madrid and Arsenal have odds of 6/1 with Barcelona viewed as the fourth biggest favourites at 13/2.

Barcelona have a number of superstars in their squad, including Lamine Yamal, who caught the attention of the world at Euro 2024 for Spain.

They also have Robert Lewandowski, who is the top scorer in the Champions League so far this season with seven goals in six games.
