'Sources tell me': Michael Owen claims he's been given some inside information on Mo Salah's contract extension

Unsurprisingly, Mohamed Salah has emerged as the talk of the town for his exploits on the pitch for Liverpool in recent weeks.

The Egyptian has been in fine form under Arne Slot and has started every Premier League and UEFA Champions League under the new manager as the Reds find themselves at the top of the table in both competitions.

Salah took centre stage once again last week as he scored a matchwinning brace to help Liverpool to a 3-2 win against Southampton, a result that took them eight clear of Manchester City in the Premier League summit.

However, speculation about his future is dominating the back pages currently as his current Liverpool contract runs out at the end of the season.

And Michael Owen says he has heard something about Salah’s future from his own sources at the club.

Mohamed Salah and Liverpool yet to agree on contract length

After the win against Southampton, Salah claimed he was closer to leaving Liverpool than staying, sending the Anfield faithful into a bit of a frenzy.

The Egyptian willingly spoke to the press after the game and confirmed that the Reds are yet to offer him a new contract, adding that he is ‘disappointed’ with how things have transpired.

A lot has been made of his comments, but Owen feels the two parties are haggling over the length of the contract before putting pen to paper on an extension.

“I think fans around the world will be very annoyed at the club,” said Owen on Optus Sport’s YouTube channel.

“If that's the case – and I can't imagine Mo Salah is gonna lie – it's really bad from the club's point of view.

“What I hear is that Salah is wanting a longer-term contract. When you're young, you want shorter contracts to keep the desirability, but when you're older, of course, you want stability and to be secure.

“He's as fit as a fiddle and he's still banging them in but if he's asking for five years or something, then rightly so the club will think. My sources tell me that it's more of a term problem."

David Ornstein feels Liverpool are in positive talks with Salah over an extension, so we’re not at panic stations, at least for the time being.

What next for Salah?

Salah’s comments could be described as ill-timed as Liverpool have crucial games against Real Madrid and Man City coming up, but you can’t really argue with his comments.

He is one of the best players in world football and wants to stay, but with time running out, Liverpool are yet to offer him an extension.

The Reds will be weighing up all kinds of factors like his age and length of contract, but they have to put all their principles aside and somehow meet Salah halfway as Liverpool simply can’t afford to lose a player like him for free.
