'All I can say': Andy Robertson gives verdict on Mohamed Salah's comments about leaving Liverpool
Today at 10:45 AM
Mohamed Salah has emerged as the talk of the town in recent weeks due to his exploits on and off the pitch for Liverpool.
He was the star of the show for the Reds in their Premier League clash against Southampton as his second-half brace spearheaded them to a 3-2 win.
Three crucial points away from home meant Liverpool went eight points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League, making them frontrunners for the title.
However, Salah’s comments after the game sent the Anfield faithful into a bit of frenzy as he made a brutally honest confession about his future.
And now, Andy Robertson has given his thoughts on the Egyptian’s comments ahead of the UEFA Champions League clash against Real Madrid.
Andy Robertson defends Mohamed Salah after recent Liverpool comments
The 32-year-old usually doesn’t speak to the media after games, but for the first time in his Liverpool career, he actively invited journalists over to have a chat with them after starring in the Reds’ win against Southampton.
Salah claimed he’s closer to leaving Liverpool than staying, adding that he’s disappointed that the Reds are yet to offer him an extension.
When quizzed about Salah’s comments, Robertson confirmed that the Egyptian’s work rate and commitment to the team hasn’t reduced in the slightest despite his situation, as is the case for Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
“Honestly, for us as players, it’s nothing we can get involved in,” said Robertson at a press conference.
“All I can say is you look at Mo today, yesterday, he is the ultimate professional. In fairness that goes for Trent and Virgil who are in similar positions.
“Every one of them is focused on the next game, they have been leaders this season. For us in the training room, if they can do that then we can do that. They are not being distracted by anything else.”
What next for Salah?
A lot has been said about his comments, but Salah was well within his right to tell the Liverpool faithful exactly where all parties stand in terms of a new contract.
In fact, the biggest takeaway from his comments is that he clearly signaled his desire to stay and commit his future to the club, which is a great sign for Arne Slot’s project.
Michael Owen feels Liverpool and Salah have different ideas in terms of contract length, which he believes to be the main factor that’s holding up the deal.
Time will tell if the Egyptian stays or goes, but he has certainly made his intentions abundantly clear. Over to you, Liverpool!
