'Start from': Roy Keane says there's a lesson Ruben Amorim can learn from Arne Slot once he joins at Man United

Manchester United will soon join Liverpool in having a brand new manager for the rest of the 2024/25 season.

The Red Devils were rejoicing over the summer after the news that Jurgen Klopp would be leaving Anfield.

Klopp had tormented United over the past handful of years, inflicting some heavy, heavy defeats on the likes of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag.

With Ten Hag shown the door in October, though, the Old Trafford side have moved swiftly to hire Sporting manager Ruben Amorim.

Amorim was one of the candidates Liverpool considered over the summer before ultimately plumping for Arne Slot.

And as Slot continues his brilliant start to life with the Reds, United legend Roy Keane has suggested that Amorim should look at the Dutchman for instant inspiration.

Roy Keane suggests Arne Slot lesson for Ruben Amorim

Slot had an undoubtedly difficult job when coming in to replace Klopp at Anfield. The task of succeeding legendary figures at huge clubs has proven problematic in the past.

One man who knows that all too well is David Moyes, who was handed the impossible job of replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at Man United in 2013.

And after speaking on that experience and looking ahead to Amorim’s tenure for the latest edition of The Overlap, Moyes was interrupted by Keane, who suggested the Portuguese should take a leaf out of Slot’s book at Liverpool.

“I have got to say he [Amorim] is in a completely different situation,” says Moyes. “I was very fortunate to take over the champions of England at the time. I was coming from a different [angle]. And probably coming into a dressing room which had great respect for Alex and what he had done.

“I think the players now might be looking at saying by the way if we don't step up, the manager might be coming from a stronger position because these players are going to actually have to step up.

“It's not always calling the players out but I see it where players are quite happy to hide behind managers at the moment and let the managers take the hit for it,” added the Scotsman. “When I could do with some of them coming out and saying I'm not at it at the moment. We are not getting much of that.

“I actually think Man United have really talented players, but I think work-rate, that would be the first thing.”

“Liverpool won last night [Tuesday] and the manager said about work-rate and intensity. That is a good place to start from,” answered Keane.

Liverpool watching Amorim with interest

From a Liverpool point of view, many will be willing Amorim to fail from the minute he sets foot in Manchester.

However, it will certainly be interesting to take a look at what Liverpool could have won.

The Reds will be happy with their lot, of course. Slot has just made the most successful start any manager has ever made at a Premier League club.

A settling in period was largely expected for the Liverpool head coach, as it will be for Amorim. But as Keane added, Slot’s record has shown that that does not necessarily have to be the case.

“If he hits the ground running like Slot and you get a couple of good wins, people will say he doesn’t need time,” predicted the former United captain.

We shall see.
