Supercomputer rates Liverpool's chances of UEFA Champions League qualification after Bayer Leverkusen rout
Today at 02:30 PM
Liverpool made it four wins from four in the UEFA Champions League as they brushed aside Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 at Anfield.
Luis Diaz took centre stage with a second-half hat trick – his first as a Liverpool player – while Cody Gakpo also got his name on the scoresheet to complete the rout.
The Reds have been in stunning form under Arne Slot, who has won 14 of his 16 games in charge of the club since taking over the reigns from Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool have been particularly superb in Europe and have won each of their four games without too much of a fuss as the Anfield faithful dream of a deep run in the competition.
And that might well be in the offing as their chances of making it through to the knockout stages have emerged.
Liverpool well-placed to play UEFA Champions League knockout football
Liverpool already have 12 points from four games in the UEFA Champions League and find themselves at the top of the 36-team table.
No team has a perfect record at this stage of the competition and only Inter Milan (0) have conceded fewer goals than the Reds, which goes to show just how good Slot’s team have been.
Having performed admirably thus far, Liverpool will look to finish in the top eight, which would enable them to qualify for the Round of 16 directly, as opposed to what would be the case if they finished between 9-24 – which would require them to contest in the play-off round.
After matchday four, an Opta Supercomputer ran 50,000 simulations to deduce the final points tallies of each of the 34 teams.
The Reds have been given a chance of 49.8% of topping the table and have the biggest probability of finishing with 19 points (18.9%).
Before the tournament began, the same drill was repeated.
It was found that a total of 16 points would give teams a 98% chance of finishing in the top eight, while achieving 10 points would give them a 99% chance of securing a place in the top 24.
Considering all of the above data, Slot’s side are in a fantastic position to automatically qualify for the Round of 16 thanks to the flawless start to their European adventure.
