The Champions League has a different feel to it his season, with 36 teams all competing against each other.

Whereas fans had become used to far smaller, four-team groups in the past, UEFA decided to mix things up and give the competition a reboot for 2024/25.

So far, it has worked out exceptionally well for Liverpool. The Reds have won four out of four and sit right at the top of the Champions League table.

As the only club left with a 100 per cent record, Liverpool are two points clear of Monaco, Sporting, Brest and Inter who each have 10 points apiece.

Given that holders Real Madrid sit 18th and the likes of Man City, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid are 10th, 17th and 23rd respectively, the competition does have a fresher feeling to it.

A special mention must go to Brest, who are having a brilliant time on their first appearance at the top table of European football. And after beating Sparta Prague on Tuesday, captain Brendan Chardonnet has sent a word of warning to the Liverpool squad.

Brendan Chardonnet sends Liverpool warning

Brest’s is a fantastic story. Having spent four of the past 10 seasons in the French second division, the historic club finished third in Ligue 1 last term.

That qualified them for this year’s Champions League where they have been taking advantage of a slightly favourable draw.

Having so far played Sturm Graz, RB Salzburg, Bayer Leverkusen and Sparta, some would argue that Brest have not really been tested in the competition so far.

But they still had to get the points and a 0-0 draw against Leverkusen aside, they’ve won each match.

And speaking to Canal+ via Foot Mercato after their latest win, Brest captain Brendan Chardonnet joked that the French side have Liverpool in their sights.

“We deserved to be in this competition and we want to believe in it until the end,” said the 29-year-old.

“We give everything, we don’t cheat, we’re 100%. It’s really cool to play this competition and to have these results. Are we behind Liverpool? Oh too bad! We’re going to catch them!”

What’s next in the Champions League?

Perhaps Liverpool will not be quaking in their boots at Chardonnet’s warning shot, but the Reds would be wise not to underestimate any opponent in the competition.

The new format has emboldened sides like Brest who would ordinarily find themselves with virtually no chance of getting out of a four-team group.

Having won each game so far, though, Liverpool have put themselves in a superb position. Next up is the big one, as the Reds take on Real Madrid at Anfield once again.
