Liverpool ground their way to a forgettable 2-1 win over Wolves on Saturday.

The Reds had been in good form going into the game having won three on the spin following a setback against Nottingham Forest.

But little of that was on display in the early stages of Liverpool’s trip to Molineux.

The Reds were loose in possession, lacklustre in the press and leggy whenever given the chance to break forward.

Nevertheless, despite a less than vintage performance, Arne Slot has Liverpool sitting top of the Premier League.

Goals from Ibrahima Konate and Mohamed Salah helped them get there, but according to Gary Neville, neither player was the best on the pitch for the Reds on Saturday.

In truth, both of Liverpool’s goal scorers had very mixed days at the office in the West Midlands.

Salah in particular was worryingly off colour. The Egyptian could not get into rhythm at all and wasted several promising positions.

As for Konate, the Frenchman scored a good goal – his first in the Premier League – but was later at fault for Wolves getting back into the game.

Commentating on Sky Sports, Neville blasted Konate for the part he played in allowing Rayan Ait Nouri to nip in and score.

But, asked to pick his man of the match as the game drew towards a close, the Man United legend was much more complimentary about his choice, Ryan Gravenberch.

Gravenberch has been superb of late and in Neville’s eyes, was the best player on the pitch against Wolves.

“I think the best player has been Gravenberch,” said the pundit. “He’s in really good form and he’s been good again. So, he gets it.”

Did Ryan Gravenberch deserve man of the match?

As you can probably tell by Neville’s rather subdued awarding of Gravenberch as his man of the match, there were not many standout performers for either side at Molineux.

However, we’d argue that Diogo Jota deserved to get the nod ahead of Liverpool’s No.38.

Jota was instrumental for the opening goal, setting Konate up with a delicious left-footed cross. The forward then won the penalty which Salah converted to win the game.

As a result, we think Jota was Liverpool’s best player on the day.

Gravenberch was perhaps a close second, with Dutchman largely controlling the middle of the pitch for the Reds. But we’ve certainly seen better recently from him.
