Reliable reports have the Liverpool right back and La Liga giants close to a final agreement on a contract that would see Alexander-Arnold join them on a free transfer.

The worst kept secret surrounding Liverpool football club and its players in 2025 has just maybe been the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who for months now has been expected to join Real Madrid in the summer on a free transfer.

For the 26-year-old fullback who came through the club's academy and previously set his sights on becoming Liverpool captain, there has been a studious effort made not to address the story and to try to keep the focus on the football.

It appears, perhaps, the time for trying to keep the focus on the football is at its end with just nine games and two months to play in the season, as a slew of reports this week are claiming he's close to agreeing his Madrid move.

There have been suggestions of such before. The difference now is that the likes of The Athletic's David Ornstein are adding their bylines to the mix to give the story far more legitimacy than when it was only in the Spanish tabloids.

Madrid are said to have been working to convince Alexander-Arnold for the past two years now, seeing him as a top target for 2025 when he could join on a free right around when they would need a replacement for Dani Carvajal.

Some will blame the timing of Jürgen Klopp's departure for getting in the way of a possible renewal late in 2023. Others will point to Alexander-Arnold agreeing a four-year deal in 2021 as a sign he always wanted to at least keep options open.

That same year, Alisson and Andy Robertson agreed six and five year deals, respectively, and the need in football to always renew with two years left to minimise the risk of losing a player on a free often makes longer deals the norm.

Regardless the specifics of when, how, and why Alexander-Arnold's free transfer to Madrid became the plan, it now seems close to fruition. For Liverpool, at least, that means they can now move on and plan for a future without him.
