Rio Ngumoha made his first start for Liverpool under-18s since his eagerly anticipated transfer from Chelsea a few weeks ago, but he was unable to prevent his side from going down to a 3-2 defeat at home to Newcastle.

Despite the disappointing result for Marc Bridge-Wilkinson's side, the 16-year-old showed just why the Reds were so determined to sign him as he tormented the visitors to the Kirkby Academy.

He caught the eye throughout the afternoon with a series of jinking dribbles and stepovers along the left flank, drawing a good save from Magpies goalkeeper Will Anderson in the first half and being unlucky not to score when a powerful shot thudded off the crossbar after splendid link-up play with Clae Ewing.

Newcastle would no doubt have been relieved to see Ngumoha being substituted with 20 minutes to go, by which stage he'd already served notice of just why Liverpool fans should be greatly excited by what he can offer over the coming season and beyond.
