'We have so much fun': Mo Salah surprisingly names former Chelsea icon as one of his best friends in football

Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah has been continually hitting new heights all season long.
The Egyptian has long been seen as one of the best players on the planet, but in 2024/25 he has been playing on a different level entirely.
Now undoubtedly among the greatest in Liverpool history – as well as in the Premier League more widely – Salah will be remembered long after he leaves the Reds.
Such sustained greatness naturally brings comparisons with top players from years gone by, both at Liverpool and the wider footballing world.
One man who Salah is often likened to is Chelsea legend Eden Hazard.
But while debates can often rage for days between Liverpool and Chelsea fans about which player was the better one, Salah has just made a surprise admission about Hazard himself.
Mohamed Salah names Eden Hazard as best friend
When you come to compare Salah and Hazard in terms of numbers, there’s really no competition. The Liverpool man wins out.
But Hazard fans will always argue that the Belgian wizard was the much enjoyable player to watch as he glided and bamboozled his way past defenders.
For the two players themselves, though, they are clearly not bothered about all of that.
The pair briefly shared a dressing room back in 2014, when Salah joined Chelsea, and judging by his comments to TNT Sports Mexico on Friday, Mo enjoyed his time with Hazard.

“Me and Eden are very good friends,” Salah said after being asked to named his ‘best friend in football’. “When we see each other we have so much fun.
“But I’m close to Kostas [Tsimikas], I’m close to Dominik [Szoboszlai].”
“Virgil [van Dijk] also, we’ve been together eight years so we have so much respect for each other.
“I like Trent [Alexander-Arnold] a lot but he’s crazy! He doesn’t like to talk but I love him. Robbo [Andy Robertson] also. Robbo’s more talking, Trent more listening but they both do what they want.”
Salah has moved past Hazard comparisons
Debating that Hazard was actually better than Salah is one of Chelsea supporters’ favourite pastimes.
You can understand why. The Blues could have had them both playing in the same team but chose not to give Salah the time he needed to fully settle in. It’s somewhat embarrassing for them.
Apperances | Goals | Assists | |
Mo Salah | 268 | 172 | 82 |
Eden Hazard | 245 | 85 | 54 |
However, in reality, there is no question that Salah wins out in this argument. The 32-year-old is only six months younger than Hazard yet one is already retired and the other is still breaking Premier League records.
If he carries on the kind of form he’s in now, then Salah should be in a bracket with the likes of Brazilian icon Neymar in debates moving forward.
Still, while the internet rages with arguments about the two of them, it’s nice to hear that Mo and Eden just have a laugh about it all.
