Tottenham Hotspur considering January transfer decision over Stoke City loan star
Today at 05:55 AM
Stoke City loan centre-back Ashley Phillips could be recalled by Tottenham Hotspur amid their injury problems, as per The Standard.
Stoke City made good use of the loan market in the summer transfer window, bringing a number of Premier League prospects in on temporary deals.
The biggest hit of the bunch has been striker Tom Cannon. He was sought-after in the summer and he has caught the eye since coming in on loan from Leicester City, locking down a starting berth up top.
The Potters’ other loan aces have made notable contributions of their own, with Andy Moran impressing and Lewis Koumas showcasing his undoubted potential. In defence, Ashley Phillips has nailed himself as a starting XI mainstay after earning his opportunity.
Phillips has started the last nine Championship games for Stoke City. However, they could be set for a blow regarding the centre-back through no fault of their own.
According to The Standard, parent club Tottenham Hotspur are considering a January recall for Phillips as they struggle with injuries at the back. Cristian Romeo and Micky van de Ven – Spurs’ go-to centre-back partnership – are both sidelined.
As such, they could trigger the recall clause in Phillips’ loan deal when January comes around.
A blow for the Potters
Stoke City might have other centre-backs on the books but Phillips has emerged as a go-to player under Narcis Pelach. He’s cemented his place in the side and will be benefitting from all the action he’s getting.
However, it could be that he’s needed back at Spurs. Chances will arise if Romero and van den Ven are out but once fit, he’ll drop back down the pecking order.
It’s a tricky call for Spurs to make, and the Potters will be hoping it’s one they aren’t forced into. However, the Premier League side might be more inclined to recall a loan player like Phillips over signing a replacement themselves.
Pelach’s centre-back options
As said, Stoke City are fairly well-stocked on centre-backs, but it’s not out of the question that they sign another and if Phillips is recalled, they’ll likely seek a replacement.
All of Ben Gibson, Michael Rose, Ben Wilmot and Bosun Lawal can play as natural central defenders. Enda Stevens has slotted in before although mainly in a back three, while youngster Jaden Dixon could be called upon if needs be for cover.
If Phillips goes, a replacement should be on the radar though. The ideal scenario would see him stay, but Pelach and the recruitment team will plan for all eventualities.
