Andy's Player Ratings: Sunderland 1-1 Bristol City - Roberts gets late equaliser
12/10/2024 04:46 PM
Patrick Roberts scored right at the death to snatch a point for below-pat Sunderland against Bristol City. Here's how Andy rated the Lads…
Anthony Patterson: 6/10
Didn't have much to do all night but although he technically he wasn't at fault for the goal, you'd really want him to be aggressive and make that his with Ballard and Alese being indecisive.
Trai Hume: 6/10
Was OK, not overly tested going backwards and was fine on the ball but a muted performance.
Dan Ballard: 5/10
Dealt well with both Sinclair-Armstrong and Wells but was very indecisive for the Bristol City goal and got caught out. Almost scored a winner late on from a deflected Neil ball.
Chris Mepham: 6/10
Was untroubled most of the evening and played some lovely diagonals, although did get turned a bit too easily by Mehmeti for a chance that probably should have seen us two down.
Aji Alese: 6/10
Was combining well with Watson early on but not the same support for Mayenda once he had switched sides. Looked tidy enough defensively until the goal, when he failed to clear and then poked the ball to the goalscorer.
Dan Neil (C): 7/10
Controlled the game before the break and although Bristol City had the upper hand a lot in the second half, Neil dug in and tried to drive us on.
Jobe Bellingham: 7/10
Was good on the ball all game, carrying the ball especially well. Was often a bit too slow to play the ball but City couldn't get it off him.
Eliezer Mayenda: 7/10
Final ball wasn't always there but caused both visiting full backs all sorts of problems all evening. Some lovely first touches to get past his man.
Chris Rigg: 5/10
A bit disappointed with him tonight, had some reasonable opportunities around the box but either snatched at them or took too long to make a decision. Tidy enough in open general play without standing out.
Tommy Watson: 6/10
Had started really well, looking bright down the left and causing problems but got injured attempting a shot which was blocked.
Wilson Isidor: 5/10
Extremely isolated up top, had a routine header saved by the goalkeeper in the first half and had a couple of nice touches to lay the ball off for teammates but just couldn't get into the game.
Substitutes
Patrick Roberts: 7/10
Rested due to illness but then called into the fray earlier than expected with Watson's injury. Caused his usual havoc but without the final ball until late, late on when Aouchiche picked him out.
Dennis Cirkin: 6/10
Tidy after coming on but not really called to defend or attack much.
Adil Aouchiche: 7/10
Looked dangerous after the came on, had a half chance himself but couldn't quite get a meaningful shot off and then got past his man and did really well to pick out Roberts.
Aaron Connolly: 6/10
Barely involved after his late arrival.
Man of the Match: Dan Neil
Bristol City couldn't get near him in the first half, as he controlled the tempo of the game. The team struggled to adapt to City's changes after the break but Neil was the one who tried to take the initiative and drag us back into the game.
