Jeremy Ngakia said he wanted to make his family proud after receiving his first international call-up with Democratic Republic of Congo.

The right-back was born in Deptford but is of Congolese descent, and has been named ahead of World Cup qualifiers at home to South Sudan (Friday March 21) and away at Mauritania (Tuesday March 25).

“I’m very proud,” the defender said to watfordfc.com.

“To see my family happy means a lot to me. I just want to make them even more happy, so hopefully this is the start of big things.”

Twenty-four-year-old Ngakia, who has made 21 appearances for Watford this season, scoring once, said that he first heard the news of his potential call-up online.

“When it was confirmed, I couldn’t believe it!” he added.

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.

“The last few years have been tough with the injuries I’ve had.

“I needed time on the pitch to build myself, and I feel like now is the right time to go.”

There will be a familiar face for Ngakia in his international camp as Hornets team-mate Edo Kayembe is a regular in the DR Congo set-up.

“He’s given me a lot of intel about what’s going to happen and how it works,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to it.”
