Nottingham Forest are going in search of some new players this month but it will be a case of quality over quantity.

The Reds are flying high in the Premier League and sit third with 44 points from 22 games. As a result, there really is no need for wholesale changes or panic signings at this stage.

Evangelos Marinakis would like to sign a striker. Forest only have Chris Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi and it’s clear that reinforcements might be needed in that area of the pitch.

Awoniyi is linked with West Ham this month and he might even leave the club. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that Yoane Wissa is a target for Forest before the window closes.

It might not be just a striker that Forest are keen to sign this month, however. With the window drawing to a close in a couple of weeks a defensive target has emerged – and he’s a familiar face!

Nottingham Forest linked with Nuno Tavares

According to Caught Offside, Forest are continuing to track Tavares – along with Brighton. The defender made 12 appearances last season with the Reds but moved to Lazio on loan from Arsenal in the summer.

The 24-year-old didn’t really impress Steve Cooper and played very little football. When Nuno Espirito Santo took over it appeared he might get a chance but soon picked up an unfortunate injury.

It would appear as though Espirito Santo – or someone at the club – saw something in him. He’s still on the radar it would seem and it’s perhaps not a surprise given his form this season.

He’s become one of the best left-backs in Europe on his current form. Tavares has managed eight assists from his 18 matches in all competitions and that level of performance hasn’t gone unnoticed in the Premier League.

Forest can do better than Tavares

So right now, perhaps Forest can’t do better than Tavares as he’s one of the top-performing left-backs in Europe. However, this might just be a flash in the pan and perhaps he’s a player to keep tabs on for a little while longer.

Tavares looked alright under Espirito Santo last season. He didn’t set the league alight by any means but by the same token, he was hardly horrific when he played during the second half of the campaign.

Forest will be looking at a number of left-backs for the summer. Alex Moreno has been linked with a move back to Spain, whilst Neco Williams is predominantly a right-back by trade.

Whether Tavares is on the radar as a serious signing remains to be seen. However, if Forest do secure European football, the club might look to target better for the left-back spot.
